Rainer Maria Rilke’s “Letter to a Young Poet:” A Tribute -1

Beginning as something hidden and personal
“Verses,” he said, “Have no style of their own!”
Don’t seek an answer or appreciation outside you
the answer to everything lies
in the inner depth of your heart!

Ask what is it that makes you write
how it would feel, if you were forbidden to do so!
In silent hour of night, ask thyself
“Must I write?”

If the answer rings out with approval
in simple, strong, “I must.”
Build your life on it,
merging into its strongest impulse!

Don’t begin with “Love,”
“facile” and “ordinary,” he termed it as!
“Nature,” a topic, one should come close
Perceiving it anew of everything
having seen, felt, loved and lost!

Write, what the everyday life offers to you
sorrows, desires, thought that cross your mind!
Expressing each emotions with heartfelt, silent, sincerity
taking images, things, dreams and objects,
from all around!

If your everyday life is poor
blame yourself, rather than life!
For life is full of riches for creator,
neither poverty nor indifferent places, at its core!

If you still find yourself in prison
walls devoid of worldly sounds.
Don’t you have the riches of childhood memories
“jewel beyond all price,” he writes down!

As you nurture the sunken feeling of enormous past
solitude of yours, you will notice, expand!
A place, where you live by twilight,
the noise of other people and chaos, a far cry!

On turning within if the poem flows
realization as sunshine will dawn!
Not wanting to know any more
if, what you have written to be good or bad!

When it is a piece of your own life,
you will realize that it has risen out of necessity,
to be written!
Look within and see how deep the life flows
accepting the answer as given!

The question then that you seek outside
will be answered, during the quietest hour!
For everything that one writes, lies within oneself...
Nature, thus devoted to entire life!
