Rainer Maria Rilke’s “Letter to a Young Poet:” A Tribute -4

Letter to a young poet,
“...dear Mr. Kappus,” thus he refers to...
one nearer to the soul and

whose anxiety of life being
more beautiful and touching to Rilke,
than the echo and ebbing away
of everything around during his Paris stay!

Enormous landscape from where he answers
the letter to him!
The wind from the seas as if a call has been...
Existence there is none to answer
question and feeling, having a depth of their own!

Even the most articulate of all
fail to express in words that are delicate!
Then what is the solution to
what one thinks upon!

"Trust then," he says, "on what your eyes rest upon
trust in nature, as vision broadens above!"
Love humbly and simply serve
winning the confidence of what looks poor!

Everything in its wake becomes easier
coherent, reconciling not
in the outer realms of conscious mind...
but, what aware, awakens
and bestows with knowledge
to the inner recesses of the mind!

Waiting patiently of everything
unresolved in the heart
love the question itself…
as if they were locked rooms
or books in some language unknown!

Don’t seek answer of which you have none
as it is not the apt time to live with them!
“Live the question now,” he says
for some day in future; it will cross your path
leaving the answer, as simply as it could have!

“Creating and forming…
blessed and pure way of living,” he says.
And, whatever crosses your way
Accept it with great trust!

Tasks entrusted upon one
is difficult, no doubt!
Everything serious is difficult
and, everything is serious for sure!

When you recognize your own talent and nature
your own experience, childhood and strength!
One who has not been influenced
by “convention and custom.”

There, you will neither
“be afraid of losing your essence.”
nor “become unworthy of
your dearest possession!”

Bodily delight, a sensory experience
nothing different from a beautiful fruit
that fills or feels the tongue!
An infinite learning of that knowledge
Great in itself!
There is nothing wrong to accept it thus...
what is bad though,
is people misusing and applying it
as a stimulant to fill…
“the tired places of their lives and as a distraction,”
rather than saving it for their “highest moments!”

Eating too, has become something else
Necessity of the one hand,
excess on the other!

All the deep, simple needs
in which life renew itself
losing clarity of vision and is “muddy.”
Vision transparent, for those,
who live solitarily...
rather than dependent!

When one sees the beauty
in all animals and plants
as “a silent, enduring form of love and yearning,
uniting, multiplying and growing"

not out of physical pleasure or pain,
but out of sheer necessity!
The mystery thus received then
by human being is
filled with indescribable beauty thus!
A single creative thought
that brings alive "thousand forgotten nights of love!"
Confusion, where at surface level means nothing,
in-depth everything then, thus becomes a law!

“…a great motherhood,” he says persist
“in the form of communal yearning…” then
Motherhood, present in a girl, woman young or old
or motherhood in men,
as he creates fulness in his innermost realms!

"Perhaps then sexes" as he says
are “more akin than” as “people think...”
 Liberating all men and women
from all mistaken feelings and aversions...
where they seek each other not as opposites
but as re-union of human beings,
as brothers, sisters or as neighbors!

Thus, love solitude and sing out with verse
that causes you pain...
of those who are close to your heart
yet far off!
Vastness, which reaches the star,
and is great!

Be happy about your growth
a journey of your own!
Gentle with those, who are behind,
while staying confident and calm!

Tormenting them neither with your doubts
nor frighten them with your faith and joy!
Comprehending any of it,
beyond their understanding and all!

Seek out simple and true feeling
common with them!
Don’t ask for any advice
or expect any understanding from them!

Believe in love…
stored up within you, like an inheritance!
Have faith that in this love
there is strength and blessing so large
that it can make one travel, far and wide
without having to step out at all!

Solitude, a support and home!
Finding path where...
there once had been walls!
