On the second day of the New Moon:Dooj it’s called!
The corridor of the house moped well.
The whole day, she waits and fast
for the long life, of one who means a lot!
Welcoming the new light, to be blessed all along!

Song narrating, the story long forgotten…
Of the Yama and the Yamuna, as brother and sister...
A boon: Blessed Yamuna had from her brother
A Celebration named Bhai Dooj:
when every sister will pray for her brother's long life,
As in return, her brother promises, of protection and care!
Vermilion and sandalwood paste, on the head as a dot,
Hands smeared with rice water and vermilion,
Betel leaves, five areca nuts, lotus seeds and a silver coin placed on the hand
She sings thrice of the song, as she washes her brother's hand:
"Yamuna notal Yama kay,Hands smeared with rice water and vermilion,
Betel leaves, five areca nuts, lotus seeds and a silver coin placed on the hand
She sings thrice of the song, as she washes her brother's hand:
Hum Notay chi apan bhai kay
Jawayetak Ganga-Yamuna mein baeidh rahay
Tawaeie tak Humar bhai kay Urda badheyat rahey!"
“As Yamuna prays for the long life of Yama
I too, welcome my Brother in a similar fashion and pray:
As long as the waves last in the hearts of Ganga and Yamuna
May my brother’s life span be so long!”
